I want to kick things off with an idea that often feels counterintuitive—the paradox of wellbeing and high performance. Can you really have both?
At first glance, these two concepts seem at odds. How can you prioritise wellbeing while striving for high performance? Can you truly excel in a fast-paced, demanding environment without sacrificing your health? If you’ve ever wondered how to balance both, you’re not alone.
The Self-Checkout Paradox
A paradox is when two seemingly contradictory things can be true at the same time. A great everyday example is the self-checkout at a supermarket. In theory, it’s designed to save you time, but more often than not, you end up calling for assistance, leading to frustration and delays.
Many of us believe the same paradox exists between wellbeing and high performance. We think we must choose between taking care of ourselves or excelling at work. But that’s a false choice—because high performance requires great wellbeing.
Small Changes, Big Impact
Instead of viewing wellbeing as an obstacle to success, think of it as the foundation. The secret lies in small, consistent habits that maintain energy, mood, and motivation. These micro-actions compound over time and have a profound impact on how we perform—especially in periods of intensity.
When work demands are high, ask yourself: What are one, two, or three small things I can do right now to sustain my energy and motivation?
Some examples might be:
- Taking a short walk between meetings
- Practicing deep breathing for a minute or two
- Hydrating with a glass of water
- Grabbing a healthy snack to refuel
- Stepping outside for some fresh air and sunlight
Energy, Mood, and Motivation: The Pillars of Performance
Everything flows downstream from your energy, mood, and motivation. When these are in balance, your productivity, decision-making, and creativity thrive. Without them, high performance is unsustainable.
So rather than viewing wellbeing and performance as opposing forces, see them as interconnected. Your ability to perform at your best depends on how well you manage and sustain your energy over time.
The Mindset Shift for 2025
This year, let’s shift our mindset. Let’s stop treating wellbeing as a luxury or a trade-off and start recognising it as the foundation of success. Small actions done consistently can help you navigate the demands of high performance while maintaining your health and resilience.
So, as you look ahead at your day or week, what small but impactful changes will you prioritise?
