Welcome to week three in our April series on alcohol—this time, I want to talk about a shift I’ve been noticing in the role of alcohol in workplace culture. More and more companies are starting to host alcohol-free corporate events, from away days to team socials to Christmas parties. And in my view, that’s a very positive step forward.
The Culture Is Shifting—And That’s a Good Thing
When I worked in the City, all the way up until 2012, alcohol was deeply entrenched in corporate culture. Client dinners, team nights out, Christmas parties—most of these revolved around alcohol, often with a free bar and the kind of chaos that follows when boundaries get blurry. It was the norm. Expected, even.
But looking back, I question whether it ever really supported inclusion, wellbeing, or genuine connection. For many, those environments didn’t feel safe or particularly enjoyable. They weren’t health-promoting spaces, and they certainly didn’t cater to people who didn’t drink.
Fast-forward to today, and I’m noticing a different approach emerging.
Alcohol-Free Doesn’t Mean Fun-Free
Some forward-thinking organisations are now intentionally planning events that don’t revolve around alcohol. Instead, they’re asking: What do we actually want from this gathering? If the goal is connection, inclusion, or team bonding, there are better ways to achieve it.
Whether it’s outdoor activities, wellness workshops, shared meals, or creative team-building exercises—companies are realising that you can create more meaningful connections without relying on a drink in hand.
A Healthier, More Inclusive Approach
This shift is part of a broader cultural movement that prioritises physical and mental wellbeing. It recognises that not everyone drinks, and that some people might be looking to cut down or question their relationship with alcohol.
By creating alcohol-optional or alcohol-free spaces, organisations are sending a clear message: You belong here, regardless of what’s in your glass. That’s what inclusive leadership and culture look like.
What Can You Do?
If you’re in HR, a Chief People Officer, or in any position to influence how your company socialises—this could be a great time to start the conversation. What is the current role of alcohol in your workplace culture? How healthy or considered is the role it plays really? What would it look like to run an alcohol-free or alcohol-optional event? What’s the real purpose of your team gathering, and how can you create a space where everyone feels included, safe, and energised?
Culture change doesn’t happen overnight—but this is one way to start nudging things in a healthier, more inclusive direction.
I’d love to hear your perspective on this. Have you noticed a change in your company or industry? Are you seeing more alcohol-free events? Or is it still very much business as usual, drink in hand?
